LipiFlow® Q & A

TearScience® LipiFlow® System allows eye care professionals to confidently and efficiently treat MGD patients in-office. The TearScience® LipiFlow® Thermal Pulsation System is a medical device that is FDA approved for doctors use to treat Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) - the leading cause of dry eye.

The eyepieces precisely apply heat to the inner eyelids before pulsing and gently pressing the meibomian glands. The thermal pulsation process not only unclogs the glands, but also allows them to resume natural oil production for healthy tears. Because of its single-use design and built-in sensors, it is a safe and sterile treatment for meibomian gland dysfunction and dry eye disease. The entire procedure takes about 15 minutes and is painless. Many patients compare it to getting a hot stone massage or a spa treatment for their eyes.

TearScience® LipiFlow® significantly improves gland secretions and ocular surface symptoms in MGD patients, including dry eye and less frequent or blurry vision.

Here's what you can expect from dry eye treatment with the TearScience® LipiFlow® Thermal Pulsation System:

• The treatment is a non-invasive procedure that is performed in the comfort of our doctor's office, takes only 15 minutes, and can have long-term effects
• No drugs are required after the initial anesthetic drops for TearScience® LipiFlow® treatment
• Long-lasting results—many patients report continued benefit for up to 12 months
• 400,000 treatments worldwide...and counting

When your procedure is finished, you can leave the office and resume your normal daily activities, or you can return to work right away. Following the procedure, your vision should not be affected, and discomfort should be minimal to nonexistent, even after the anesthetic eye drops wear off.

Depending on the patient and the severity of their MGD or dry eye condition, the LipiFlow treatment's outcomes can vary. Symptom reduction or relief can take several weeks to several months.

Some patients can experience relief from dry eye symptoms for up to 1-3 years.

It is important to understand that dry eye disease is a chronic condition with no permanent treatment. While LipiFlow® is not a cure, it can help improve dry eye symptoms and prevent the progression of evaporative dry eye and further meibomian gland loss. Many factors can affect how long LipiFlow® provides long-term relief, including your age, general health, how long you've had evaporative dry eye syndrome, and the amount of activities you engage in that can aggravate dry eye symptoms, like staring at a computer for a long time. Repeat LipiFlow treatments may be recommended or required for some patients.
